This LP can be considered both ridiculous and problematic, but it is also charming/irresistible in its way. Mitchum took a break from being an on screen badass to try to cash in on the Calypso craze, started by Harry Belafonte. This type of curiosity is worth having, especially new pressing at a decent price!
Destination Moon present a reissue of Robert Mitchum's Calypso - Is Like So, originally released in 1957. When Harry Belfonte's Calypso became the first LP to sell over a million copies, it stimulated an unprecedented calypso craze stateside, with myriad musical and cultural repercussions. Of all the calypso oddities to appear in its wake, Robert Mitchum's Calypso - Is Like So is certainly the most curious, as well as the most enduring. On this debut LP as a singer, actor Mitchum tackles Sparrow's "Jean And Dinah", King Radio's "Not Me", Wilmouth Houdini's "Coconut Water", and other Trinidadian anthems with considerable aplomb, infusing his delivery with a faux Caribbean lilt that flatters, rather than mocks; a few Don Rae adaptations broaden the palette of this most peculiarly appealing picture. Color vinyl.
