This pressing of Barbecue comes from Nippon Columbia/Lawson Entertainment on yellow vinyl. Barbecue is considered a classic of Japanese pop and for good reason. The brother duo of Bread & Butter created an LP of unique songs that feels cohesive as a whole.
The second track on Side A is a funky pop single, Pink Shadow, that became a staple of Tatsuro Yamashita's live shows. The A Side continues with tracks that move into blues/roots territory. B Side starts with a cover of the Youngbloods' Get Together, followed by Subway, which is classic pop song that feels proto-City Pop. Next thing you know, you're on a funky track like Memory.
How do Bread & Butter navigate all these shifts? It helps to be able to call on musicians like Haruomi Hosono, Tatsuo Hayashi, and Shigeru Suzuki from Tin Pan Alley, as well as Rei Kohara from Sadistic Mika Band to play on your LP.
