Composed as the soundtrack to a performance by New York choreographer Molissa Fenley (a show commissioned by Japanese producer \u003cb\u003eShozo Tsurumoto\u003c\/b\u003e), the album was masterminded by Sakamoto with the help of the cutting-edge electronic technology of the time (the only external contributions are by Arto Lindsay on guitar and Japanese composer Yas-Kaz on percussion). Indeed, the album is a fascinating soundscape experimenting with the new sampler technology -- which, according to Ryuichi Sakamoto from a conversation with journalist \u003cb\u003eAndy Beta\u003c\/b\u003e mentioned in the liner notes, needed a computer that was huge at the time. \u003ci\u003eEsperanto\u003c\/i\u003e is composed of eight tracks displaying a varied mix of influences. \"A Wongga Dance Song\" is pulsating with rhythms while \"A Rain Song\" adopts a minimalist mode with its distinctive repetitive pattern. \"Dolphins\" and \"A Carved Stone\" are captivating ambient pieces showcasing Sakamoto's talent for setting beautiful abstract melodic ornaments over atmospheric tones. One of the highlights of the album is \"Adelic Penguins\", a fascinating proto techno piece with a funky twist stretching over six minutes which echoes the electro funk of 1981's album \u003ci\u003eHidari Ude No Yume\u003c\/i\u003e. \"Ulu Watu\", a collage-like piece featuring bird motives and a tropical soundscape closes the album with an experimental note. Led by the enigmatic Takashi Mizutani, the now-legendary band was one of the earliest bookings for the venue, and would ultimately close out OZ Last Days, a raucous five-day blowout to celebrate the short but wonderful world of OZ. To commemorate the occasion, recordings made at OZ were released as OZ \u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\" class=\"caps\"\u003eDAYS\u003c\/span\u003e \u003cspan data-mce-fragment=\"1\" class=\"caps\"\u003eLIVE\u003c\/span\u003e, a private press 2LP set featuring Miyako Ochi, Acid Seven, Masato Minami, Taj Mahal Travellers, and four tracks by the Rallizes—which constituted just a fraction of what had been recorded at the time. The monumental, MDMA-rich title track opens the album and sets the mood. The fizzing, dramatic synth riff refrain intoxicates, before cavernous slo-mo house drums enter the party to devastating effect. It's followed by the hypnotic, prog-Balearic mood piece \"The Fog\". Dizzying synths never detract from the overall smoothness; this is vital, classy cosmic disco. \u003cb data-mce-fragment=\"1\"\u003ePink Floyd\u003c\/b\u003e-on-pingers languid space-funk makes up \"Don't Turn Away (From My Love)\". The beautiful, faintly creepy synth-prog of \"South Beach Sunrise\" closes out the first LP with swathes of lush keys and horns. The music spans an unusually broad and contrasting range of influences, exploring the possibilities of mood music, imaginary soundtracks and pop dissonance, while also borrowing widely from films and contemporary arts. During the early 1980s, interest in experimental music began to grow among a small group of committed local music fans and musicians. Small independent shops started playing a pivotal role in this nascent scene. First, they imported many of the obscure rarities that were gradually being reissued or bootlegged in the West. Later, as some of the regular customers and employees formed their own groups, many shop owners started establishing their own labels. Even then, Boku・Neko・Platanus was issued in extremely limited numbers – so much so that it’s incredible it ever came to light at all. After supervising the recording of the Buddhist chants, Midori Takada added her own compositions, with subtle layers of percussion and the melodies of her beloved marimba, giving full life to the sacred texts.
